Loom
At Seoul Art Space Geumcheon, Seungean Cha kindly offered me a workshop.
After watching her giving a workshop on open studio, I was curious about the process of weaving and she kindly spent an hour with me to explain the basics. I knew that weaving is similar to computer programming since both are based on an instruction or an algorithm fed to a machine to generate an output, which can be a textile or a graphical output, for example. However, weaving is quite different from coding that a human has to process the algorithm by hand. I had to be careful enough to pass through each thread, but at the same time I needed to be aware of a pedal that I am pressing, to follow the score. I really enjoyed the process since I was responsible for both physical (the threads) and abstract (the score) representation at the same time. Nevertheless, I only experienced the surface of weaving; I know that Seungean took time to setup the threads on the loom and carefully chose the colors. I would like to find other opportunities to continue practicing weaving.
